Step 1: Install the Correct Blade
Replace the standard
40-tooth blade on your power saw with an
80-tooth carbide blade.
This ensures clean, precise cuts without chipping the moulding.
Step 2: Position the Moulding Correctly
Place the moulding
ornamented side up against the back of the saw’s fence.
The
rabbet (recessed) side should be facing
toward you.
Step 3: Measure and Mark the Cut
Slide the moulding along the
fence extension until it reaches the correct measurement.
If you don’t have a fence extension with a 45-degree scale, consider using the
Logan Double Saw-Fence Extension for accuracy.
Step 4: Make the Miter Cuts
Lower the spinning blade
through the moulding at a 45-degree angle.
Repeat the process until
all four frame sections are cut and mitered at both ends.
Step 5: Check for Accuracy
Lay the cut frame sections flat and align the miters.
If there’s a small gap or misalignment,
use a rotary sander to correct the angles for a perfect fit.
Step 6: Glue and Clamp the Corners
Apply
a small dot of wood glue to the mitered edge of two frame pieces.
Do not use Gorilla Glue—opt for Titebond or similar wood glue.
Secure the pieces in a
corner clamp and tighten.
Step 7: Prepare the V-Nail for Joining
Take a
V-Nail (a small, V-shaped staple) and place it
sharpened-edge down onto the joiner’s nose.
The joiner tool uses a
magnetic pin to hold the V-Nail in place.
Step 8: Position the Frame for Joining
Turn the corner clamp
so the ornamented side of the frame faces down.
Slide the mitered joint
under the magnetic nose of the joiner.
Step 9: Insert the V-Nail
Press down on the
lever of the joiner to insert the V-Nail into the back of the frame.
The magnetic pin retracts, allowing the V-Nail to drive firmly into the wood.
Step 10: Ensure a Secure Fit
The
V-Nail will sink into the wood until it is flush with the surface. As it enters the wood, it
deflects against the grain, pulling the seam tighter for a strong bond.
For added strength, use
a second V-Nail per joint and reinforce with wood glue.
Final Check & Completion
Repeat this process for all
four corners of the frame, and allow the glue to dry before handling.
Your custom wood frame is now ready for
finishing, painting, or installing artwork!
