How to Measure a Floater Frame

Measuring Tools:

-Rigid measuring tape (for accurate width, height, and thickness measurements)

Frame Components:

-Floater Frame (Choose standard or stepped based on your preferred float effect)

-Hanging hardware (D-rings, wire, or sawtooth hangers)

-Offset clips or mounting brackets (to attach the artwork securely inside the floater frame)

Optional Add-Ons for Depth Adjustments:

-Foam board or mat board strips (to raise artwork if it sits too deep in the frame)

Measure the width, height, and thickness of your canvas or panel.

Width: Distance from one side to the other.

Height: Distance from top to bottom.

Thickness: Depth of the canvas or panel.

*Tip: Measure at multiple points, especially at the corners, as stretched canvases can warp slightly.

Standard Floater Frames: To achieve a “floating” effect with a visible gap between the artwork and the frame:

Add ½ inch to both the width and height of your artwork dimensions. This provides a ¼ inch gap on all sides.

Example: For artwork measuring 16″ x 20″:

Frame width: 16″ + 0.5″ = 16.5″

Frame height: 20″ + 0.5″ = 20.5″

Stepped Floater Frames: These frames have a built-in step that provides most of the spacing.

Add ⅛ inch to both the width and height to ensure a comfortable fit. This offers a 1/16 inch allowance on each side.

Example: For artwork measuring 16″ x 20″:

Frame width: 16″ + 0.125″ = 16.125″

Frame height: 20″ + 0.125″ = 20.125″

Rabbet Depth – This is the recess at the front of the floater frame where the artwork sits.

Ideally, the rabbet depth should match the thickness of your artwork so that the surface of the art is flush with the frame.

For a canvas thickness of ¾ inch: Choose a floater frame with a rabbet depth between ⅞ inch to 1 inch.

For a canvas thickness of 1¼ inches: Opt for a rabbet depth between 1⅜ inches to 1½ inches.

If the artwork is recessed (sits below the frame edge), you can elevate it by placing strips of mat board or foam board underneath until it’s flush with the frame surface.

Final Check Before Ordering

-Confirm measurements are accurate to 1/16 of an inch.

-Ensure you’ve selected the right float space.

-Double-check the rabbet depth to avoid fitting issues.
