When you use raw unfinished picture frame mouldings, be careful. Certain wood types, such as poplar (see image), should not be used raw. By “raw” we mean without painting or the application of non-transparent wood stain.
When used raw, the grain of poplar varies in color and continuity over the length of the moulding and may not match when chopped into the four sections to make a frame. If you’re looking for a frame to use unpainted or with a transparent stain, consider one of the other unfinished wood types: ash, red oak, cherry or walnut. Alternatively, for a natural look, see our maple/natural picture frames. Please note: Custom cut frames are not returnable/refundable for natural variations in the wood grain.
